Nikon D5000 vs Canon EOS 500D

Are you a starter? You want to upgrade? Here you ask questions about the material you want to use. Remember this, it isn't the camera that takes the pictures.

Nikon D5000 vs Canon EOS 500D

Postby FatalSky » Mon Feb 08, 2010 10:32 am

Hey everyone!
As I am waiting for the airshow season to arrive again I am looking forward to buy a DSLR camera :)
I've been looking on the internet and I came across a Nikon D5000 which would be a great starter camera (since I have no experience in using a reflex camera) but after looking around my eye also fell on a Canon EOS 500D.
They both got their own advantages and disadvantages and I guess a Canon 450d would be more comparable with the Nikon but I would also like to have a video function on it :).
Now I wonder what you guys would recommend me, I know it's not so easy because everyone adores his own piece of camera with their set of lenses but I can use some advice!
I don't want to end up with something I have to get repaired after a few photos,... ;)

That's one part of my question, the second part: are lenses of Tamron trustworthy or is it better to buy a Sigma or Nikon/Canon lens?

Grts!

Hi Viky,

My own "piece" is a Canon 400d & a Canon 50d. I'm very pleased with it.
But Nikon has better quality than Canon. Nikon is normaly more expensive than Canon.
Canon has, till now, a better sensor than Nikon.
Lenses from Nikkon (Nikkor) are better, but also more expensive than Canon lenses.

I don't have any experience with Tamron lenses.
I have a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 EX DG HSM, a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 EX DG, a Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 EX DG.
I'm very pleased with it. I'm using the Sigma 70-200mm since '97, allthough I ordered a Canon brand.
This last one has a quicker AF and IS.

Perhaps this info can help you making a dissision..

I bought the D60 a year ago. I think it is in the same class of the newer D5000.
For me the D60 was a great camera to start with. I used it in all types of weather (Snow, ice, rain, etc.)
it never let me down. But after some time you will notice his limitations. Now i regret I didn't buy the D90.

Hey Viky,

Why not step into a real & recommended shop where they can tell you what you need and have all this hardware in your hands?

Make some shots with some camera's + lenses and discuss the results in the shop. Or hire them for 1 day to have 'the feeling' and see the results at home on your computer.

You may also read some good books about D-SLR's and photo-editing (RAW - JPEG) before getting started with this new gear. Then you can make a good decision, I think.

Hope to see your pics here soon.
Gr,

Rob Martaré.
